John Staines is a Managing Director at ZRG with over 30 years’ experience recruiting and optimizing talented leadership teams in Life Sciences, Healthcare, Retail, and Consumer Products. He works with leaders to assess, structure, and build exemplary teams poised to achieve outstanding business results.
Previous Experience
John is a strategic global Human Resources leader with extensive experience, from startups to Fortune 100 companies. As CHRO of both Life Science and Consumer Products companies, he developed and led talent management programs, with special emphasis on Diversity, Equity & Inclusion. He has managed succession planning, large-scale change, and M&As. His expertise is in developing high-performing, diverse leadership teams, and has worked effectively with boards of directors and external advisors. Prior to joining ZRG, John held senior-level Human Resources roles at DaVita, Medco Health Solutions, Cigna, PepsiCo, Mattel, and The Gap. He also led a Human Resources consulting practice for many years.
Areas of Expertise
John’s areas of expertise include the hiring of C-Suite executives in Finance, Supply Chain, Technology, Sales & Marketing, and Human Resources. As a global leader, John also has done extensive work in Asia, Europe, and Latin America. On the consulting side, John helps clients with their Talent Development initiatives including Leadership Assessment and Development, Diversity, Equity & Inclusion strategies, developing a bench for critical roles, organizational effectiveness and restructuring to support growth, and succession planning.
Education
John received his BS in Economics from the University of Wisconsin-Madison and his MBA from the University of Michigan.
John developed and taught the “Finance Academy” curriculum at Hyatt Hotels, and “Developing ‘A’ Class teams” for British Petroleum. He also taught “Managing Strategy in Healthcare”, an MBA course at Northeastern University.
Hobbies and Interests
John is very keen on giving back to the community. He has served on several non-profit boards such as the American Diabetes Association of South Florida, the Board of Trustees of Renbrook School in West Hartford, CT, and was Vice Chair of the American Youth Soccer Organization, Region 1258. John is an avid golfer, hiker, soccer coach, and wine collector. He is also fluent in Spanish. John lives in Los Angeles with his wife, Jenny.
